Welcome to The Twist – Your Guide to Giving Back in Columbus

Hello friends of CGB!

Today begins the second month of 2018, and here at Columbus Gives Back, we’re already in full swing for the year ahead. Who’s with us?

It’s been a very eventful January chock-full of 18 volunteer events – some old, some new, all fun – it’s true. One of our favorite memories we made this month was our first inaugural awards ceremony! Thank you to everyone who came out to our happy hour at Seventh Son to be a part of it all.

Did you happen to miss out?

1) Check out our next happy hours. We host one every month. This month is rumored to be at Endeavor Brewing…

2) Don’t worry, we’ve got you covered. Scroll on for a brief review of our ceremony winners:

1. VOLUNTEER OF THE YEARRachel Gratz.
Rachel has volunteered with us at SO many events this year! (In addition to the many hours she gives back with Habitat for Humanity). She’s kind, and fun, and an overall wonderful person we’ve had the pleasure of getting to know. She’s an amazing representative for all of our diverse and passionate volunteers!

2. NON-PROFIT PARTNER OF THE YEARLifeCare Alliance
We’ve been partnering with LifeCare for many years now! We help out most often with cleaning up from and prepping for their Meals on Wheels program, two Mondays every month. Check out our next event with them on Monday, February 5th! (PS we unfortunately did not have a LifeCare representative at our happy hour, so we don’t have a receiving photo).

3. VOLUNTEER EVENT OF THE YEARMy Very Own Blanket
Like many of our non-profit partners, we have fallen in love with the mission of My Very Own Blanket. They provide handmade blankets and pillow cases to children in foster care, and we have had a blast helping them by tying blankets and sipping hot chocolate at Chocolate Cafe once every few months. These are some of our most popular events – and guess what? We have one coming up 🙂

4. 1000TH EVENT OF CGBRonald McDonald House Charities of Central Ohio
Tuesday, December 19th marked our 1000th volunteer event with Columbus Gives Back. Yes, you read that right! More on that here. We’re so excited for our next 1,000 events, and the next, and the next…and many more times baking cookies for the residents of the Ronald McDonald House here in Columbus. (Also, no representative was present at our happy hour to receive the award!)

5. THE JULIANA HARDYMON EVENT LEADER OF THE YEARCurt Roginski

Juliana Hardymon is the fearless woman who started it all! Yep, she’s amazing. And look how much Columbus Gives Back has grown. We currently have 17 event leaders who bring passion, humility, and unique personality to every event. This year’s event leader of the year goes to Curt, who has led the most events of any leader on our team in 2017! Way to go, Curt. We love your sarcasm, laughter, and love for all people. You’re awesome. Juliana and Curt are pictured below:

6. HAPPY HOUR VENUE OF THE YEARZaftig Brewing
We have so much fun checking out different breweries, wineries, and hot restaurants for our monthly happy hours! Zaftig wins this award for 2017 because when we accidentally scheduled our January happy hour on a day they were actually closed…they opened their doors just for us!! And, their beer is amazing. Seriously, you gotta stop in and try it.

7. #SOCIAL TWIST OF THE YEARLocal Cantina
We ADORE Local Cantina. As we do many, many restaurants in the city. I mean, the Columbus food scene is on point…and Local Cantina’s $2 taco tuesdays, bottomless chips and salsa, and spacious tables for our big groups of volunteers post-events are just a few reasons why they win our #socialtwist spot of the year.

…And that’s all, folks! Wondering who will win our 2018 awards? Well, we have a whole year to find out 🙂 Stick around, and sign up for one of our events soon! We can’t wait to meet you, or if we’ve already met, we can’t wait to give back with you even more to this wonderful city we’re a part of.

See you around,
